* A BIG thank you is sent out to the Midtown PTO for all of their help with the PE Program over the past two years.  With the money, we were able to purchase items that would have been impossible to afford otherwise.  We also want to thank the Coordinated School Health Program for their contributions to the PE Departments throughout the system.  Much has been done for Midtown because of the work of Patti Wells, the School Health Coordinator.  You can visit her site here:  http://schoolhealth.roaneschools.com/Home.html

Thank you for all that you do for the Midtown students!!!

Purchases have included:Volleyball/Badminton standards, a complete set of Medicine Balls ranging from 2-12 lbs, Mesh jerseys for team identification, flag football belts for tagging games, a portable pop-up backstop for throwing and striking practice, a set of ultimate Hula Hoops, a set of Foam balls with anti-sting protective coverings used for throwing and catching activities, a set of outdoor baseball/softball/kickball bases for the Grades 3-5 playground, and a 6 ft tall basketball goal for the K-2 playground.

GYM Time is always one of the student's favorite times of the week and has been designed to make Physical Activity fun.  The main focus this year is to incorporate high intensity exercise with Sport related skills training.  Classes will continue to have their GYM times split into two segments:  Fitness segment and an Activity Segment.

Fitness Segment - This segment focuses on the combination of Cardiovascular and Strength Training.  Students have used Medicine Balls, Jump Ropes, Exercise Bands, Fitness Equipment, and Teacher-lead Calisthenics to teach various ways to be Active.  The incorporation of uptempo music has made GYM day a hybrid version of the traditional PE class.  An extremely fun class means that students enjoy being Active!

Activity Segment - This segment gives the students the opportunity to use learned skills in a game setting.   Classes participate in and learns the principles of teamwork and cooperation skills, learning of rules and regulations, dealing with winning and losing situations, understanding of offensive and defensive strategies, and overall game-play in a group setting.

Gator Ball, Gator Bait , Corner Tag, Spiders and Flies, Planet Invasion, and Torpedo are just a few activities that the students will be exposed to this year.

GYM class offers FUN and EXCITING ways to engage our students in a Healthy Lifestyle!
